Questions to ask a supplier of battery electrode cleaning consumables
A cleaning consumable is a process input. The supplier conversation should establish what the material is, how it is controlled and what happens when something changes — not only what it costs.
Key takeaways
- Ask for the material definition before the commercial terms.
- Separate measured data from descriptive claims.
- Confirm traceability from lot to delivered roll.
- Agree change notification and revalidation in writing.
- Check that the supplier can say "we do not claim this".
1. Material and function
- What exactly is the substrate, and how is it bonded?
- Is the product dry, impregnated or available in both formats?
- If impregnated, what is the liquid and what is its verified function?
- Which contaminants is it intended to remove, and which is it not intended for?
- What roll materials and surface finishes has it been evaluated against?
A supplier that describes every product as suitable for every roll is not giving you selection information. The useful answer includes exclusions.
2. Data and test methods
- Which parameters are measured on every lot, and by what method?
- What are the tolerances and the sampling plan?
- Can you see a sample certificate of analysis?
- How is lint or particle release characterised, if claimed?
- What residue data exists, and on which surfaces?
Ask for the method, not the result alone. A value without a method cannot be reproduced or audited.
3. Quality system and traceability
| Area | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Inspection | Incoming, in-process and release checks with records |
| Traceability | Raw material to lot to delivered roll |
| Nonconformance | How a failed lot is contained and investigated |
| Change control | Notification, notice period and revalidation |
| Certifications | Only those actually held, with scope and validity |
4. Supply and continuity
Ask about production capacity for the requested volume, lead time variation, minimum order quantity and how the supplier handles a substrate or liquid change. For a single-source consumable, continuity is a technical risk, not only a purchasing concern.
Confirm packaging, labelling, pallet configuration and shipping documentation. A material that arrives in damaged packaging may be unusable even if the roll itself was correct at release.
5. Claims and limits
Ask directly: what does the supplier not claim? A credible answer identifies where data is missing, which conditions were not tested and what the customer must evaluate. Treat a claim of universal performance or zero residue without a method as a warning.
Score the answers, not the presentation
Use the same question set for every candidate and record "not provided" as a result. A polished brochure is not evidence; a documented method and a traceable lot are.

Frequently asked questions
What is the first question to ask a supplier?
Ask them to describe the material and its intended function in their own words, then compare that with the data sheet. A supplier who can explain the limits of the product is easier to work with than one who only lists benefits.
How do I verify the quality claim of a supplier?
Ask for the test method, the sampling plan and a lot certificate, then check that the claimed parameter is actually measured. A certificate that repeats the data sheet without measured values does not verify anything.
Is a lower price a warning sign?
Not by itself, but it should trigger questions about substrate grade, loading control, packaging and change control. A price difference usually comes from a difference in one of those, and the cheapest option can be the most expensive in scrap and downtime.
What should be in a change-notification clause?
A requirement for written notice before any change to substrate, fibre, binder, liquid, process or production site, with a defined revalidation requirement and a minimum notice period. Without this, the product you qualified may not be the product you receive.
